LRC Access Services: ILL FAQs

Moving Forward

Hours of Operation

Interlibrary Loan services are Monday - Friday from 8 AM - 5 PM.

Hours are subjected to change, however in the event notice will be provided.

Faculty Users

Interlibrary Loan materials may NOT be kept for the semester.

You may NOT place Interlibrary Loans on Reserve for your students.

A maximum limit of 10 requests a day per patron.

The LRC will not copy/scan or otherwise reproduce Interlibrary Loan materials for you to include on Reserve due to Copyright Issues addressed in The Copyright Law of the United States.

Fines & Fees

You are responsible for any fees or fines imposed by lending libraries regarding overdues, lost or damaged materials.

Students: A hold will be placed on your AAMU student account and will remain in place until the account is paid in full or the material is returned. In addition, all borrowing privileges from the LRC will be suspended.

Faculty: You are responsible for the fee and if not reconciled at the Business office, it will be reported at the end of the term to the Business office.

We do reserve the right to the suspend or withdraw ILL services due to patron abuse, e.g., consistently returning material late, not picking up requested material, excessive loss of material, etc.

General Information

Textbook and eBook requests in their entirety are automatically denied.

Books, book chapters, journal articles, conference papers, and symposiums are eligible for ILL borrowing, if they are not available through the J.F. Drake LRC’s physical and online collections. If an item is owned by the LRC but noted as lost, missing, or under repair, an eligible user can request another copy through ILL.

How long does it take?  Once an Interlibrary Loan request is submitted through the ILL service, you can expect it to take up to five (5) business days for articles and up to two weeks for books. ILL requests are processed in the order received by both borrowing and lending libraries.

If the average turnaround does not meet your needs for a specific request, give your "deadline" and indicate on the ILL form whether you can still use the item after the deadline.

How many books may I request?  Patrons may have up to TEN (10) RENEWABLE Interlibrary Loans out at once.  No other requests will be honored until half of the other materials have been returned.   Please note that copyright legislation may limit the number of articles ordered from a particular volume and issue of a journal title. If there are any problems with your ILL requests, you will be notified via email.

Please note that even though another library has an item, they are under no obligation to lend it, therefore their is no guarantee that a request will be filled.

Articles will be sent electronically to your email address provided in your ILL web account, as will book arrival notices. You will receive a notification with a link to download/read the requested article.

We will make a reasonable attempt to contact you by phone but your email is the standard contact point for Interlibrary Loans.

Please pick up ILL books at the 2nd floor Reference desk. A QR code will be provided for you to properly check out the book. Books cannot be shipped to patrons under no circumstances.

Patrons have up to five days to retrieve the book once they have been notified. After five days, the book will be returned to the lending institution. A second request for the copy will be automatically denied. Do NOT return materials in the book drop. Books should always be returned to the Reference desk on the 2nd floor. Failure to do so could result in a fine.

What does it cost?

Interlibrary Loan Services strive to be cost free to you.  You will be notified if the material is available ONLY through a lender who asks for fees before the order is placed.

You will NOT be charged for a Loan you do not wish to pay for and we will cancel the request.

The LRC DOES NOT pay the fees for requested materials.

Please see the left side bar for information on fees and fines

Replacement Charges

1. Patrons with material (i.e. lost or damaged items) not returned will pay the replacement bill and all overdue fees. The replacement fee does NOT INCLUDE overdue fines levied.

2. Billed interlibrary loan material cannot be renewed.

3. Material returned after the payment of the replacement fee will not be refunded. Refunds for replacement charges are not possible once a check has been sent to the lending library.

4. Within a few days after a billed item is paid or returned to the LRC Interlibrary Loan office, the replacement charge and enrollment hold will be cancelled.

5. REPLACEMENT MATERIALS SUPPLIED BY YOU, THE BORROWER, WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED by the lending library(s). (Do not buy a copy expecting this to meet library expectations for replacement.)
