Course Description

Instrumental Methods

This course is designed to acquaint undergraduate and graduate students with the theory and interpretative techniques of Gas Chromatography (GC), Mass Spectrometry (MS), Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS), Fourier Transform-Infrared (FT-IR), Nuclear Magnetic resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy and Spectrophotometer. While the material covered in this course is mainly for undergraduate students, it would also be appropriate as an introductory course at the graduate level for those students lacking a background in chemical spectroscopy and spectrometry. It is assumed that the students in this course have had at least two years of organic chemistry. Thus, they have had at least a cursory exposure to the theory and interpretation of organic spectra.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course students will be able to:

  • Define components and operation of modern chemical instrumentation.
  • Interpret results acquired from various chemical instrumentation.
  • Assess the benefits and limitations of different instrumentation methods and instrumental components.
  • identify appropriate instrumental methods for a chemical analysis.
