Course Description
Medical Microbiology - 3 hrs. A study of the microorganisms producing disease in man and lower animals; their means of transmission; and their protection against disease. This course covers the basic principles of medical microbiology and infectious disease including the mechanisms of infectious disease transmission, and the role of the human body’s normal microflora. The biology of bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic pathogens and the diseases they cause are also covered.
Student Learning Outcomes
1. Summarize the role of the host in infectious disease, including natural barriers to infection.
2. Identify the major bacterial pathogens involved in infectious disease and identify the virulence factors that are important for infection as well as the consequences of infection.
3. Explain the role of transmission, population size, susceptibility, and virulence in endemic disease, epidemic disease, emerging diseases, and bioterrorism.
4. List the major viral pathogens involved in infectious disease and identify those aspects of viruses that are important for causing disease and targets for therapy.
