Course Description

Chemistry Special Topics

A course designed to help the chemistry major begin to fully grasp the fundamental concepts which undergird the understanding and practice of chemistry. Topics will vary according to student need but will usually embrace such subjects as atomic theory (from the Bohr atom to atomic and molecular orbitals), reaction mechanisms, equilibria, kinetics, electrochemistry, thermodynamics, nuclear and radiochemistry, molecular spectroscopy and chromatography.

Learning Outcomes

1. Students will develop an understanding of the differences between classical and quantum theories.

2. Students will develop an understanding of matter-wave duality.

3. Students will develop an understanding of the different models used in solving quantum problems.

4. Students will develop an understanding of the basic laws of thermodynamics and their applications.

5. Students will develop an understanding of the basic phase rule and phase equilibria for one- and multi-component systems.

6. Students will develop understanding of the basic electrochemical phenomenon & chemical equilibria.

7. Students will develop an understanding of the basic solutions properties and transport properties.
