Course Description

Biochemistry II

This course is designed to provide a study of metabolic reactions and regulations of metabolic pathways for polysaccharides and glycoproteins, fatty acids, lipids, cholesterol, amino acids, and nucleotides; and fundamental principles of storage and utilization of genetic information, including structures of DNA and RNA, DNA replication, transcription, and protein biosynthesis.

Learning Outcomes

1. To equip students with an understanding of basic concepts and design of metabolism.

2. To equip students with an understanding of the central catabolic pathways (glycolysis and the Krebs cycle).

3. To equip students with an understanding of fundamental principles of the electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation.

4. To equip students with an understanding of fundamental principles of photosynthesis.

5. To equip students with an understanding of metabolic reactions and regulations of polysaccharides.

6. To equip students with an understanding of metabolic reactions and regulations of fatty acids.

7. To equip students with an understanding of protein turnover and amino acid catabolism, and the biosynthesis of amino acids.

8. To equip students with an understanding of metabolic reactions and regulations of nucleotides.

9. To equip students with an understanding of the biosynthesis of membrane lipids and steroids.

10. To equip students with an understanding of the DNA replication, recombination, and repair.
